McPherson men's soccer reloads with 15 commitments

McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s soccer program has added 15 players in its 2010 recruiting class, as announced by head coach Doug Quint. A well rounded class, consisting of six transfer students and nine freshman, it is represented by five states and one foreign country, including Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Brazil.

“This is an extremely talented class from top to bottom,” said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. “We worked hard to add a good mixture of experienced transfers with a solid freshman class. With such a large and talented senior class graduating, we had some big shoes to fill. The senior class was 26-7-3 in the KCAC over the last four seasons with two championships, setting a standard of excellence with our program. When you combine our returners with the incoming class all the pieces are in place to challenge for a third league championship next fall.”

The 2010 freshman include Cory Obermeyer, Ramsey Khalidi, Josh Aubuchon, Connor Folkerts, Tyler Strampel, Cameron Stansell, Zach Karnish, Paxton Lanning and Austin McEndree, while the transfers consist of Tarek Khalidi, Geverton Ost, Derek Garcia, Ethan Kennedy, Zach Doolan and Phillip Moore.

Tarek Khalidi – F – 5-11 – 168 – Augusta, Kan. (Barton County Community College)
Khalidi was a two-year letter winner at Barton County Community College under the direction of head coach Oliver Twelvetrees. In two seasons at Barton, he tallied seven goals and two assists, including a three-goal sophomore campaign. While in high school, Khalidi posted 32 goals and 14 assists. He received First Team All-state, All-Region, All-League and a spot on the Wichita All-Metro team following the 2007 season. Outside of soccer, Tarek earned two varsity letters in basketball, one in track and field, and one in tennis.

Quint on Khalidi: “Tarek is a terrific addition to our squad. His experience at NJCAA national power Barton County Community College will be vital for us next fall. He is a strong, athletic striker with good speed and technical ability. He will help us immediately next fall. I look forward to watching his success here at McPherson College.

Geverton Ost – F – 5-10 – 150 – Porto Alegre, Brazil (Hesston College)
Ost spent the 2009 academic year at Hesston College, but did not play. The 5-10, 150-pound Ost will enter 2010 with three years of soccer eligibility. He is a graduate of Colegio Unificado in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Quint on Ost: “Geverton has the potential to be a very special player for us. He is an attacking player whose gifted on the ball and has the ability to break defenses down with his creativity. He will fill some shoes that we lost to graduation immediately next fall.”

Derek Garcia – D – 6-0 – 145 – Derby, Kan. (Allen County Community College)
Derek played one season under the direction of Allen County head coach Doug Desmarteau where he scored one goal and recorded one assist from his defensive position. A 2008 graduate of Derby High School, Garcia scored five career goals, while recording 15 assists in two varsity seasons with the Panthers.

Quint on Garcia: “Garcia has the ability to play multiple positions for us next year. He is a technical player with good vision and a high work rate. I coached his brother through his club career and look forward to competing with Derek.”

Ethan Kennedy – D – 6-4 – 210 – Round Rock, Texas (Allen County Community College)
A two-year letter winner at Allen County Community College, Kennedy tallied one goal and three assists from his center-back position. Prior to Allen County, he posted 31 goals, 43 assists in two varsity seasons at Stony Point High School in Round Rock, Texas. Ethan played club soccer for the Dallas Texans Austin Division under the direction of coach Rich Swain.

Quint on Kennedy: “Ethan adds another physical specimen to our back-line. He is a big, strong defensive player who is good in the air and technical on the ball. The junior college experience gained while at Allen County will be vital for us next fall. We improve on the defensive side immediately with his addition.

Zach Doolan – MF – 5-7 – 140 – Smithville, Mo. (Allen County Community College)
Doolan, an Academic All-American at Allen County, scored three goals, while recording 12 assists in two seasons with the Red Devils. A 2007 First Team All-State member, Doolan tallied 36 goals and 21 assists during his prep campaign at Smithville High School (Mo.). Zach played club soccer for coach Tom Sieter of the CSC Rangers

Quint on Doolan: “Zach is an extremely quick player who has the ability to play many different positions. He was a very dangerous striker in high school who adjusted to a different position in college and played it well. His versatility will play a big role for us.”

Phillip Moore – D – 5-7 – 140 – Topeka, Kan. (Allen County Community College)
A First Team All-City, All-League, All-Region and All-State player during his senior season, Moore played two seasons at Allen County Community College where he recorded one goal. Moore played club soccer for coach Pat Waugh of the Prodigy Blitz.

Quint on Moore: “Moore has a great work ethic and will give us another strong flank player. He is versatile and can play either in the back-line or in the midfield. He will be a nice addition to our team.

Cory Obermeyer – GK/F – 6-2 – 172 – Emporia, Kan. (Emporia High School)
An Honorable Mention goalkeeper during his junior season, Obermeyer played both goalkeeper and forward during his senior season. He recorded seven goals and two assists as a striker, while posting 64 saves. Following the 2009 season, he received First Team All-Region, All-Centennial and All-State honors. Cory lettered four years in soccer and track, and twice in bowling at Emporia High School.

Quint on Obermeyer: “Cory is one of the premier keepers in the state of Kansas. He has great shot stopping ability, is long, athletic, quick and good with his feet. Cory had an outstanding prep career. When Emporia made their state run however, he was playing up top as a striker. It’s nice to have a player so versatile in your program.”

Ramsey Khalidi – F – 5-11 – 140 – Rose Hill, Kan. (Rose Hill High School)
The younger of the Khalidi brothers joining the McPherson soccer team, Ramsey recorded 57 goals and 37 assists during his prep career at Rose Hill High School, ranking him third all time in points for the Rockets. He earned First Team All-League, First team All-Region, First Team All-State, All-Metro and All-Region Academic honors during his four years at Rose Hill. He played club soccer for coach Kevin Teneyck of the EFC Attack.

Quint on Khalidi: “Ramsey is proven goal scorer at a very successful program. His prep numbers speak for themselves. He gives us another serious scoring threat. I look forward to seeing what he can accomplish at McPherson College.”

Josh Aubuchon – F – 6-0 – 155 – Rose Hill, Kan. (Rose Hill High School)
A four-year letter winner at Rose Hill High School, Aubuchon ranks fifth amongst the school’s all-time scoring leaders with 107 points on 39 goals and 29 assists. Following his senior season, Josh received First Team All-State, First Team All-League, First Team All-Region, All-Metro and Offensive Player of the Year for the third place finishing Rockets. As a junior, he earned First Team All-League and Second Team All-Region as a forward. He played club soccer for coach Kevin Teneyck of the EFC Attack.

Quint on Aubuchon: “Josh is a very crafty central midfielder on the ball. He had a great prep career, establishing himself as one of the premier players in the state of Kansas. Josh has a bright future ahead of him. I’m glad he chose McPherson College.”

Connor Folkerts – D – 6-2 - 200 – Aurora, Colo. (Grandview High School)
Folkerts tallied ten goals and 25 assists during his prep career at Grandview High School. Under the direction of coach Brian Wood, Conner received one varsity letter. Folkerts played club soccer for coach Randy Freeman of the Colorado Storm.

Quint on Folkerts: “Connor is another physically powerful back who sees the field well under pressure. He has a good club soccer background, and I look forward to watching him grow as a collegiate player over the next four seasons.”

Tyler Strampel – MF – 5-8 – 140 – Castle Rock, Colo. (Rock Canyon High School)
Following a Colorado State 4A Championship in 2008, Strampel helped guide the Jaguars back to the title game in 2009. Following the 2009 season, Tyler was named All-Conference Honorable Mention after being named Academic All-Conference in 2008. In three varsity seasons, Strampel posted 12 goals and 32 assists under the direction of RCHS coach Sean Henning. He played club soccer for Real Colorado under the direction of coach Ken Wagner.

Quint on Strampel: “Tyler gives us a crafty left-footed player that will make us better on the flanks. He comes from a great club program and fits well into our system here at McPherson College. I’m extremely excited to add him to our team.”

Cameron Stansell – GK – 6-0 – 160 – Southlake, Texas (Southlake Carroll High School)
Stansell, a Texas regional Olympic Development Player, lettered two varsity seasons at the goalkeeper position under the direction of Greg Oglseby at Southlake Carroll High School. Cameron played club soccer for Solar Red, a team coached by Leo Maric.

Quint on Stansell: “Cameron has had an exceptional club and prep soccer career. His club soccer plays in one of the top club leagues in the country and well known throughout the U.S. He has been an outstanding goalkeeper for them. I look for that to continue at McPherson.”

Zach Karnish – MF – 5-11 – 155 – Yukon, Okla. (Yukon High School)
Karnish scored nine goals, while recording greater than 30 assists during his prep career at Yukon High School in Yukon, Okla. A great competitor on and off the field, Zach has been a member of the National Honor Society since 2007. He played club soccer for the 92 Cosmos and coach Paul Helms.

Quint on Karnish: “Zach gives us another technically sound player that will add depth to our midfield. He is quick, with a great left foot. As he gains collegiate experience, I see him playing more of a role within our squad.”

Paxton Lanning – MF – 6-0 – 165 – Weatherford, Texas (Weatherford High School)
Lanning has been a three-year letter winner at Weatherford High School under the direction of Efren Martinez. He is a two time Academic All-District award winner and last season was selected First Team All-District. Paxton played his club soccer for Blaze Futebol Club '92 ( www.blazefutebolclub.com ). He is a four-year captain and helped guide the club to Arlington Premier Invitational League Championships in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. In 2009, Lanning was named to the '92 North Texas ODP.

Quint on Lanning: “Paxton adds another product to our team from the Dallas Texas Classic League. The level of club soccer he has played will make his transition to college soccer smooth. He is a very technical central midfield player. He has great vision, space awareness and is composed on the ball. I expect him to contribute to our team immediately.”

Austin McEndree – D – 5-11 – 165 – Humble, Texas (Atascocita High School)
Austin, the younger brother of former McPherson women’s soccer player Ashley McEndree, lettered two seasons at Atascocita High School where he recorded six assists from his defensive position. McEndree played club soccer for the Texas Rush under the direction of coach Steve Lucas.

Quint on McEndree: “Austin is a nice addition to the squad. He will give us much needed depth to our back-line. He is a hard working player with good physical size and strength. I am excited to watch him grow as a collegiate player within our system.”
