Cross Country Competes at NAIA Mid-States Classic

The McPherson College cross country teams were back in action on Saturday as the men and women traveled to the NAIA Mid-States Classic hosted by Southwestern College. The women’s team finished 15th, while the men did not officially place because only four runners completed the race.
 
Sophomore Aspen Frey (Newton, Kan.) was the top finisher for the Bulldog women as she bettered her previous season-best mark by almost 30 seconds with a 5K time of 19:48.43. Senior Ashley Huizar (La Puente, Calif.) was the second finisher for McPherson in 71st place with a time of 20:41.88. Fellow senior Lizette Guzman (Montebello, Calif.) was the third Bulldog to cover the course with a time of 21:43.23, which was good for 104th place, while sophomore Erin Loeffler (North Newton, Kan.) took 115th (22:08.86) and senior Ashley Martinez (La Puente, Calif.) finished 117th (22:12.40) out of the 171 person field.
 
Obsie Birru of Grand View (Iowa) claimed the individual title with a time of 17:30.24, while Wayland Baptist won the team prize with 94 points.
 
On the men’s side, senior David Parry (Morganville, Kan.) finished first for McPherson and 73rd overall with an 8K time of 27:32.37, while sophomore Preston Mossman (McPherson, Kan.) was second for the Bulldogs with a personal record time of 28:11.75 (95th). Senior Josh Nilles (Goddard, Kan.) finished 98th overall with a time of 28:15.10, while fellow senior Cody Compton finished 171st with a time of 31:14.15.
 
Wayland Baptist’s Kennedy Kithuka took the top spot with a time of 23:17.02. Oklahoma Baptist had three runners in the top 15 to claim the team championship.
 
The Bulldogs take a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 when they host the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Wall Park in McPherson, Kan.
