Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.) tallied a career-high 19 points, as she made 7-of-8 attempts at the free throw line, to lead the McPherson College women’s basketball team to a 77-68 victory against Ottawa University Saturday night at the McPherson Sport Center.
With the victory, McPherson snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in KCAC play, while the Braves fall to 6-11 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Sophomore guard
Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) added 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while junior forward
Taylor Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) continued her stellar play with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Overall, the Bulldogs finished the night shooting 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the floor, including a 61.3 percent (19-of-31) success rate in the first half. Additionally, McPherson held a 44-31 advantage in rebounding, while forcing 15 Brave turnovers.
McPherson opened the contest with a 10-2 run, including four points each by Porter and Puttergill, and closed the half with a 17-5 run to bookend the opening period and take a 41-23 lead into the locker room.
After Ottawa’s Kelsi Meier opened the second period with a layup, Porter scored seven straight points to propel the Bulldogs a game-high 48-25 lead with 18:02 remaining. However, Ottawa chipped away at the advantage, aided by a 9-0 run and six 3-pointers, to pull within 73-68 with under a minute left. McPherson responded to the Braves late pressure with eight consecutive made free throws en route to the victory.
Ottawa finished the contest 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the field, including a 12-for-24 effort from beyond the arc. Shauna McClure led OU with 16 points off the bench, while Lauren Buckles added 13 points, respectively.
McPherson returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18, when they travel to Bethany College. Tipoff between the Bulldogs and Swedes is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT).
