Geneva, Ohio –
Derrick Toney (Salinas, Calif.) finishes tied for sixth in the high-jump at the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. The meet was held inside the SPIRE Institute Track and Field Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio and ran from the first through the third of March.
Toney went into the competition with the second highest jump, 2.11m (6’ 8.75”), in the NAIA this year. The opening height for high-jump was 1.98m (6’ 5.95”) and Derrick was one of 15 athletes to clear it and did so on his first attempt. Unfortunately, that would be the only clearance for Toney; the bar was then raised to 2.03m (6’ 8”) and he missed on all three tries. There were 10 other participants who could not get over that height but since Derrick cleared the opening height on his first try, he and six others finished tied for sixth.
With his sixth place finish, Toney joins an elite group of individuals as an NAIA All-American. This is his second All-American honor as he finished third in the 2011 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Derrick will now get some much needed rest before competing in McPherson’s first outdoor track and field meet of the season which is scheduled for March 8
th at the Tabor Invitational.
