McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College’s pitcher/outfielder Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) was named to two All-KCAC teams for his performance in the 2012 season. Werts was placed on the All-KCAC Second Team as an outfielder and was an All-KCAC Honorable Mention pitcher. Werts was the sole MC baseball athlete to receive a conference award.
Werts had 13 appearances on the mound this season, recording two wins and nine losses in his 11 starts. He threw five complete games and a total of 64 and two thirds innings in 2012. Werts surrendered 110 hits out of the 291 batters he faced for an opposing batting average of .378. He gave up 82 runs, 71 earned while striking out 47 players.
When he wasn’t pitching, Werts played left field and closed out the year with a .929 fielding percentage. He had 59 putouts, 20 assists and only six errors in his 39 games played.
At the plate, Werts hit .320 for the season, tallying 32 hits in his 100 at bats with a slugging percentage of .500. Of his 32 hits, he had eight doubles, two triples and two homeruns. Werts logged 16 RBIs, 22 walks and 23 runs this year.
In the second year after reinstating the program, Bulldog baseball ended its season 4-35 overall, 0-26 against KCAC opponents.
“Taylor was probably one of the most improved players on the roster, said head coach Andrew Ehling. “It's not easy being a two way player but Taylor did a great job of balancing his pitching and hitting. I look forward to coaching him the next two years.”
