McPherson, Kan. – The first two games of 2015 for the McPherson College women's basketball team will be played in Salina, Kansas as they compete in the Coyote Classic hosted by Kansas Wesleyan University. The Lady Bulldogs take on Peru State College (Neb.) on January 2nd at 2:00 p.m. (CT) and then York College (Neb.) at 12:00 on Saturday.
Mac is hoping to turn things around in the New Year after going just 2-12 throughout the first half of the season; the 'Dogs are 1-3 in the KCAC to this point with their lone win coming in early December against Bethany College.
McPherson is tabbing 58.6 points a game and has a negative scoring margin of 10.5. They are knocking in 34.2% from the floor and a poor 25.7 from distance; they connect on 65.5 percent from the free throw line. The team nets 43.0 rebounds a night to go along with 23.4 turnovers, 12.4 assists, 8.5 steals and 2.9 blocks.
Bailey Brown leads the charge in the scoring category for the Bulldogs; she tabs 17.1 points a contest while playing in a team-high 35.3 minutes. The junior has already made over 100 free throws and also leads the team in rebounds with her 8.1 average. Sunny Smart is scoring 12.3 per game and has hit 38 three balls this year, 14th most in the NAIA D-II. Alicia Demaret has had a solid freshman year for MC; the forward is scoring 7.1 a game while pulling down 6.3 rebounds.
McPherson will head to Sterling College on January 8th for their first conference game of 2015; start time is slated for 6:00 p.m. (CT)
Scouting Peru State
The 2-8 Bobcats will enter the classic hot off their first win since mid-November; PSC took down Grace University 96-68 on December 17th for their final game before the holiday break. The team's only other win came against Grand View University (Iowa).
Peru State averages 70.2 points per game through their 10 contests; they count 39.2% from the field but connect on only 27.4% from distance. The team has made 63.3 percent from the foul line this year. An average of 37.3 rebounds are netted by PSC; they have a negative rebounding margin of 2.6. The squad averages 18.3 turnovers, 13.0 assists, 11.4 steals, and 2.5 blocks each time out.
Individually the Panthers have a trio of players that are scoring double-digits on average. Karlee Stuart leads the way with her 15.0 points per game; she also tallies 7.6 rebounds a night from her forward position. Shelbie Hess nets 14.5 a night while playing in an average of 32.1 minutes a game; she leads the team in field goals made with 52 and free throws dropped with 27. Brittany Harward tallies 10.4 per contest and also tabs a team-high 8.1 rebounds a night; she is one of three players that have started every game. Sydney Wilkinson, along with Hess, has also started each contest; Wilkinson has amassed a team-high 55 assists and is fifth in the NAIA D-I with her 36 total steals.
Scouting York
The Panthers sit at 4-6 this season and lost their final two games heading into break including a 112-45 drumming by No. 3 Concordia University of Nebraska. Since their 82-58 victory over McPherson back in mid-November, YC has gone 1-4 while scoring over 70 points once.
This year, the team nets an average of 69.8 points while shooting in 35.3% from the floor; they are knocking in 31.1 percent from three and 65% from the charity stripe. The Panthers pull down an incredible 46.4 rebounds a night but are still outrebounded by 4.5 boards on average. They tally 22.6 turnovers, 15.3 assists, 9.8 steals, and 4.8 blocks throughout their 10 games this season.
Cory Minjarez is the team's go-to player. She has scored 188 total points which is nearly 100 more than any of her teammates; she averages 18.8 a game. The guard has made a team-high 58 field goals including 31 three balls and also leads the team in free throws with 41-of-54 falling through. Courtney Swope is second on the team in scoring with her 9.5 average; she plays in 23 minutes per game, second highest for York. Doreen Lopez is next on the list with her 9.2 followed by MacKenzie Eller at 6.8; Eller is the team's top rebounder as she pulls in 7.6 a night.
