Juan Garcia (Reno, Nev.) was named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year on Friday, headlining six Bulldogs named to the 2011 All-KCAC Men’s Soccer teams as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
In addition to his newcomer award, Juan Garcia was selected to the All-KCAC first team after leading McPherson with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists. Garcia ranks second in the conference in both points and goals and was twice named the KCAC Offensive Player of the Week during the season. Garcia’s most impressive performance came on Oct. 1 against the University of Saint Mary when he posted his first career hat trick with scores in the eighth, 29
th and 37
th minute to propel MC to the 7-0 victory.
Joining Garcia on first team were junior defender
Michael Phillips (Spring Branch, Texas) and freshman midfielder
Heriberto Garcia (Dallas, Texas). The selection is the third for Phillips and second consecutive first team award.
Three Bulldogs were named to the KCAC second team, including senior defender
Tyler Tank (Austin, Texas), senior goalkeeper
Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas) and junior forward
Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.). Walsh leads the squad with seven assists, while ranking second on the team with eight goals.
Tank has been a member of the All-KCAC squad all four years, while Jett receives the recognition for the third time.
McPherson ended the regular season with an 11-6-0 overall record, including a 6-3-0 mark in KCAC play. The No. 4 seeded Bulldogs open KCAC Postseason Tournament play on Saturday, Nov. 5 against Tabor College. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Blue Jays is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT).
